Progress

The ASEAN SLP was inaugurated in 2016 as an initiative of the Thai National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) in partnership with the Global Young Academy, inspired by the successful Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP). This pioneer ASEAN SLP is the project corresponding to the findings of the Global State of Young Scientists-ASEAN (GloSYS-ASEAN) 2015 survey. 2016 - First ASEAN SLP The first ASEAN SLP was held from 9-12 June 2016 in Bangsaen, Thailand, bringing together 18 mid-career researchers from five countries and disciplines in the sciences and humanities. The 2016 ASEAN SLP was designed and conducted by the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University and the specialist facilitation company KnowInnovation, with co-funding support by the Thai National Science, Technology, Innovation, and Policy Office (STI), the NSTDA and PTT Public Company Limited. A detailed report on the event can be found here. 2017 - Second ASEAN SLP The second ASEAN SLP 2017 successfully took place near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 7-11 September 2017, with support from the Young Scientists Network–Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) and the GYA, in collaboration with the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), The World Academy of Sciences Young Affiliates Network (TYAN) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Malaysia and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia. All 10 ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) and Timor Leste were represented, with a total of 35 ASEAN SLP participants, designated as fellows (including 6 returning fellows from ASEAN SLP 2016). The fellows benefited from expert facilitation led by Maggie Dugan and Tim Morley from KnowInnovation and GYA member and Thai Young Scientists Academy Chair, Numpon Mahayotsanun over the 4-day programme. Past GYA Co-Chairs Eva Alisic, Bernard Slippers, GYA alumnus, Wibool Piyawattanametha and Abhi Veerakumarasivam played a significant role as mentors and provocateurs. Read a full report here. 2018 - Third ASEAN SLP From 29 November to 1 December 2018, 30 participants, including returning cohorts from the 2017 ASEAN SLP, came together at the Ministry of Education (AKEPT) in Malaysia. The ASEAN SLP joined forces with the ASEAN Young Scientists Network (ASEAN YSN), a regiona network which brings together talented young scientists from ASEAN countries to collaboratively work towards making an impact at a local, regional and global scale. The programme addressed collective leadership, effective networking and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 2019 - Fourth ASEAN SLP From 1-4 December 2019, the 4th ASEAN Science Leadership Programme (SLP) was held in Hanoi, Viet Nam. The SLP was jointly hosted by the ASEAN Young Scientists Network, Center for Youth Development and International Cooperation (CYDECO), Ministry of Science and Technology Viet Nam, Phenikaa University, the Global Young Academy (GYA), Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) Thailand. Thirty-four fellows from eight ASEAN countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam) participated in the programme. Read more here.

Outcomes

Since its start in 2016, 81 young scholars and scientists from all 10 ASEAN countries have participated in the ASEAN SLP. Its success is further marked by the confirmation of a further three years of funding by the Thai National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) from 2019-2021, for the programme to take place in Thailand.

Call for Applicants

Call for applications for the ASEAN Science Leadership Programme (ASEAN SLP), 1- 5 December 2019, Hanoi, Vietnam, is now open until 10 November 2019. The ASEAN SLP 2019 is developed as a highly interactive workshop that includes training, application, peer support and mentorship. Fellows will attend a 2.5-day, intensive on-site programme in Hanoi, Viet Nam. The ASEAN SLP is seeking ambitious and values-driven young researchers with high leadership potential who are committed towards actively contributing to or establishing their National Young Academies as well as promoting greater collaboration within a network of young ASEAN researchers. Selected ASEAN SLP 2019 fellows will be expected to continue interacting with other ASEAN SLP fellows via events and/or online means of communication; and share their skill sets and experience with fellow researchers in their respective countries. Young researchers in all disciplines of sciences including engineering, natural sciences, medicine, social sciences, arts and the humanities are welcome to apply as ASEAN SLP 2019 fellows. Only a small number of fellows will be selected each year. Thus, successful applicants must be amongst the leading young researchers in their country. Beyond research excellence, candidates should also be able to show an ongoing commitment to service or delivering practical benefit from their work. APPLY BY 10 NOVEMBER See the attached call for more details on application requirements, and the attached application form.
