Science Leadership in Africa and ASEAN The GYA supports the capacity-building Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) and the ASEAN SLP. Detailed information on the Africa SLP (in its second 3-year funding period) and ASEAN SLP (continuing 2019-2021) can be found on sub-project pages, linked here and below on this page.   Science Leadership Workshops: May 2021: Online leadership workshop for new members 34 participants and 12 seasoned GYA mentors took part in the second science leadership workshop held online. Read more here. May 2020: Online leadership workshop for new members 35 new GYA members participated in the first virtual version of the new member science leadership workshop, experiencing and reflecting on collaborative leadership skills and sparking the beginning of lasting connections for the coming five years. Read more here. November 2019: Ethics and Responsibility in Science Leading up to the 2019 World Science Forum on the topic of Science, Ethics and Responsibility in Budapest, Hungary, 43 young scientists and scholars from 23 countries participated in a 1.5 day science leadership workshop, co-organized by the Global Young Academy (GYA), the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Read more here.   April 2019: Second leadership workshop for new GYA members Connected to the 2019 GYA Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists in Germany, the second two-day science leadership workshop for new members was held. 29 GYA members participated. Read more here.   November 2018: Science leadership and science advice Prior to the 2018 biennial conference of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) in Tokyo, Japan, the GYA - in partnership with the Young Academy of Japan and INGSA - organised a one-day Science Leadership training workshop. The workshop, attended by about 40 young scientists and policymakers, aimed to introduce participants to the use of scientific evidence in informing policy at all levels of government, and to develop a personal strategy for their engagement with the science advice enterprise. Read more here.   October 2018: Convening young scientists in Latin America and the Caribbean Co-organised by the GYA and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), a joint science leadership workshop involved 18 young researchers and scientists in Latin America and from around the world in the context of the Second CILAC Forum in October 2018, in Panama. One of the immediate outcomes of this meeting was a building momentum to create a regional-level or several national-level young academies. Read more here.   May 2018: Leadership training for new GYA members In the run-up to the GYA's 2018 Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists in Thailand, the GYA held its first two-day science leadership workshop for new members, with 27 participants. Read more here.   March 2018: Conceptual workshop on science leadership training in Africa At the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) in March 2018, one of the largest gatherings of scientists in Africa to date, the GYA co-organised a workshop on “Connecting Networks to Co-Design Transformative Science Leadership Programs for Africa,” with the Robert Bosch Foundation and the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Read more here.   March 2018: Leadership and women in science Also at the Next Einstien Forum (NEF) 2018, the GYA working group on “Women in Science” together with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) co-organised a Women in Science leadership workshop entitled “Fostering diverse and inclusive leadership in academia”. More than 30 participants strengthened their individual (co-)leadership skills and extended their respective personal networks with other workshop participants, departing with a special emphasis on diverse and inclusive perspectives on driving forward one’s academic career. Read more here.   November 2017: A voice for young scientists at the World Science Forum At the 2017 World Science Forum, the GYA and the InterAcademy Partnership co-organised a one-day, pre-conference science leadership workshop, focused on the topic “Avoiding the Weaponisation of Research”, in which 43 young scientists and scholars, 29 of these GYA members and alumni, participated.

Outcomes

Since 2014, more than 200 young scholars and scientists have taken part in GYA-supported capacity-building science leadership programmes or workshops. "Without the GYA ASLP, I would never have known of the existence of the GYA, first and foremost - this led to me applying and getting accepted, and then having enough of a vision of my contribution to run for the EC in my second GYA year, and then again for Co-Chair in my third year. But beyond that, participating in the ASLP sharpened my vision for myself as an individual, especially around how I could best contribute to addressing the challenges that my continent faces. Ultimately, this would lead to a change in career, to where I now act at the interface of science and policy as a writer, a speaker, and a trainer. So close to my heart has this programme become that I now sit on its steering committee, which means I can participate in spreading the model across the continent and beyond, and this really gives purpose to my life. It sounds a little cliché but in a few words: the Science Leadership Programme changed my life." - GYA Co-Chair Connie Nshemereirwe (Uganda)
